What An Improvement

Fruitcakes are often the Rodney Dangerfield of desserts. They "just don't get no respect." And I'm sure that many of us had experiences with this product that would make us inclined us to agree with that sentiment.


One problem is that fruitcakes, especially the commercial brands are often too hard or flavorless. However, with the right ingredients this item can be a most enjoyable treat. For example, along with the usual candied fruit, walnuts are a great flavor enhancer.

But the best product of all to include is an alcoholic beverage such as brandy. I don't remember finding alcohol-laced fruitcakes on store or bakery shelves in the U.S. (regulatory restrictions?) However, here in the Philippines, at least one supermarket chain sells various brands of this pastry flavored with brandy (not brandy flavor, but the real thing). It is this enhancement that puts fruitcake on the side of the angels.
