Volleyball Birthday Cake

My daughter Joni went through a volleyball phase during Sophomore year so when her birthday rolled around we had all the kids over, set up a volleyball net in the back yard and I created a this special cake to celebrate.

I used a square pan for the bottom layers; I think it was chocolate cake with a raspberry filling. I covered this section with chocolate butter cream.

The volleyball was made using a sports/ball cake pan by Wilton. I covered the ball in rolled fondant and drew the lines by hand. Molding the fondant to the sphere shape was a challenge, but a lot of fun! The gold “plaque” on the front was also rolled fondant with the letters drawn by hand.
