Jonah's Treasure Chest Cake
I wanted to try using a chocolate icing fondant and found a perfect use for it for my little boy's 3rd birthday cake. A treasure chest cake! This cake and pirate theme were inspired by the wonderful Pirate ship my husband built for our son.
I baked the layers of chocolate cake from Betty Crocker's cake mix and iced each layer with Betty Crocker vanilla frosting. Then used the chocolate fondant (a lot tastier than regular 'plastic' fondant) to cover entire cake. I covered the lid separately. Then I coloured white chocolate icing fondant with yellow powdered food colouring to make the trims on the cake. To finish off the appearance of a treasure chest I used a wooden skewer to lightly drag lines across the fondant to mimic wood grain.
I had many complements on the cake and everyone seemed to enjoy the taste of it as well. A lot of fun to make. Now to work on my daughter's birthday request of a Mary Poppins cake.Editor's Note:
That's a great cake, Sonia. Thanks for sharing the details with our readers, especially about using the chocolate fondant.
