Striped And Dotted Birthday Cake For Meli

Striped And Dotted Birthday Cake

Striped And Dotted Birthday Cake

I made this cake for my daughter's second birthday. I wanted her cake to be fun and "different" instead of the normal birthday cake that most people have.

For the base layer of the cake I used a spring form pan because it makes clean lines and it is a lot harder for the cake to stick to it. For the ball layer I used two oven safe bowls to bake the two hemispheres. I then used buttercream between the two hemispheres then froze them. Once frozen I could finish sculpting the ball.

For the top layer, I used an oven safe bowl again, only smaller this time. I only made one hemisphere instead of two, making the top layer the "smash" cake. After crumb coating the cake, I then went to the task of applying the fondant to the cake one layer at a time.

Once the three layers were covered with white fondant, I stacked them, dowelling the bottom layer. I then applied all of the stripes, dots and balls, with white icing.

Editor's Note: You did a great job on that cake, Elizabeth. It will be one that your daughter will be able to remember (in pictures) for all her life.
