Rock-n-Roll Guitar Cake

Our brother-in-law is Mr. Rock-n-Roll. Ok, so he's not exactly a child, but young at heart counts! We made this cake as his birthday present and really wanted to surprise him with something that we identify him with - a guitar was a no-brainer.
This was a really simple cake to make. I just used basic 1/4 sheet cake pans (9x13) and stacked 12 layers using a chocolate ganache filling in-between. The layers were wrapped and put in the fridge overnight so that the guitar shape would be easy to carve out the next day.
Once carved, the cake was covered in buttercream, set, and then covered in fondant. I don't have the patience for piping so I use fondant to cover and a cake airbrush to apply the color. Hand-painting will also work well (or coloring the fondant before covering the cake).
I used the leftover cake from carving for the neck and white royal icing to pipe on the details.
Because of the sheer size and weight of the cake, I had to use a very thick piece of posterboard for the base. The base was covered in musical notes fondant.
Yum!
