Rocket Ship Cake
I wanted to make a special cake for my son's third birthday, but knew that it couldn't be too complicated since I would be putting it together during his nap time. I browsed around looking at pictures of other people's cakes and finally settled on a rocketship - there were all kinds of designs online, but in the end I ended up tracing my own.
The cake is a made-from-scratch simple white cake. I traced a design on paper first, then onto the cake once I was satisfied with the way it fit together. The cake is from a single 13x9 inch cake pan - the rocket 'boosters' are made from pieces cut from the sides and top of the 'rocket'.
The frosting is store bought cream cheese frosting. I used regular food coloring to dye the frosting, and put it in a plastic ziploc baggie. Cut off one corner of the baggie, and voila! - icing applicator!
All in all, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I had some cake left over (I trimmed the rocket because it looked better slim rather than stocky), so I made some trifle for the grown-ups, too.
Best of all? My 3 year old was delighted, and still talks about his 'wocketship take'!
