Purple Triangle Cake

Since my son was about 2 and a half years old, he had his heart set on a purple triangle cake for his 3rd birthday party. The request seemed easy enough for my limited baking skills and so I obliged.


The closer it got to his birthday, the more birthday parties of his friend's we went to, the more elaborate cakes we saw. There was the Dora the Explorer cake, set on a backdrop of a cascading icing waterfall, the tiniest of icing daisies dotting the pathway up the mountains made from hand-crafted chocolate. Everyone ooh-ed and aah-ed and then cringed a little bit as the knife sunk in to such a work of art.

Then there was the soccer field birthday cake which also impressed not only the kids, but all the moms as well, as we tried to figure out how they made everything, even the smallest details, edible. And yet even with such beautiful cakes as evidence of the possibilities that existed, he still wanted his purple triangle cake.

I hired a triangle tin from our local baking shop, and used the Victoria Sponge Recipe at http://feedmemama.com/?p=36. After the first triangle came out the oven, I realised it wasn't going to be enough cake for all the people we had invited. My husband had the bright idea of baking another triangle and cutting it into pieces to build a pyramid.

My son was delighted to see the end product, and helped to decorate it with blueberries and silver balls. I'm glad I was able to make his birthday cake myself, somehow it made it all seem so much more special.
