Pirate Hat Cake

Pirate Hat Cake

Pirate Hat Cake

My son was obsessed with pirates for about 3 months before his 4th birthday. So, I decided to make a pirate hat cake for his pirate themed party.

My favorite thing about the cake is that it is very simple -- just two round cakes! Once the cakes are baked, freeze them for at least 2 hours (this helps keep the cake from crumbling when you cut it). Put a thin layer of frosting on the top of one cake, then top with the second cake. Cut both cakes in half. Cut one of these pieces in half again, so that you have one half circle piece and two quarter circle segments.

The quarter circle segments should be lined up next to the half circle to form the sides of the pirate hat. Using chocolate frosting, cover the entire hat, including the sides. Then use white frosting to pipe the edges and draw the skull and cross bones. (Practice on a plate before drawing the skull and cross bones on the cake!)
