Pirate Birthday Cake

Pirate Birthday Cake

This particular year, my daughter was into pirates. Our budget wasn't horribly big this year, so for the birthday cake we used a generic cake mix (I think it was a swirl) and baked it in a 9"x11" pan. After leveling the bottom we covered the top and sides in chocolate icing, and used a spoon to sketch out a skull and crossbones.

The skull and crossbones was applied using white icing in a bag with round tip. Since the shape was already sketched out on the chocolate icing, it was just a matter of filling in the picture to complete the pirate cake.

Everyone dressed up as pirates, and the party favors were pirate themed temporary tattoos and chocolate coins. My daughter was turning four, so this is the first birthday party she really remembers. As a bonus her party outfit was able to double as her Halloween costume.
