Over The Hill Birthday Cake

This was a first attempt at using fondant for my husband's cake, when he turned 40.

I wanted to make a hill so instead of a pan I used a pyrex bowl, and the baking time was closer to an hour.

My biggest problem was I was using fondant for decorations as well as covering for the cake, and while I really enjoyed working with it, it was not as easy as I would have liked as the fondant dried and cracked if it got dry.

My kids used fondant to make a car, tombstone, some flowers and a road (which I used to cover the crack).

Overall it was more out of love and fun than perfect, I did learn that gumpaste or another way of making the decorations would have been better.

I look forward to trying another cake in the future using fondant, and even trying to make a recipe online that I saw for Marshmallow fondant.

If you opt to use fondant, it does take work to roll it out, but remember you have to put a small layer of buttercream on top of the cake so the fondant sticks to the cake.

I needed to keep it simple so that my kids could help decorate the cake...I didn't buy any piping gel, so I just used food coloring for lines on the road, and the letters and numbers on the person, and tombstone.

My oldest son (17) made the person, and it was his first 3d figure he's made, to my knowledge.
