My Grandmother's Fruitcake

As a child, one of my favorite Christmas memories was my grandmother's home-made fruitcake. I was enthralled watching her gather all the ingredients and spend so long creating it. She would always make the cake long before the holidays and then sit it proudly on a cake stand in the dining room, as the centerpiece of the holiday table.

On top she would put frosting, then the best part - many little Christmas figures: a Santa, a snowman, Christmas trees. It looked so magical I always thought what a shame to cut it and spoil the design on Christmas Day!

Now, long after my grandmother is no longer with us, I still treasure those happy memories of her fruitcake and we make one every year using her decorations on our cake. Perhaps my grandchildren will one day do the same!
