Mount Vernon Wedding Cake

My wedding cake has a building built into it - how cool is that!?!? I was married in a building that is a replica of George Washington's famous estate, Mount Vernon. The building in the cake is a small-scale model of Mount Vernon as well. Thus my cake had a model of the building we were in, which was a model of a historical building, are you following me? I thought not.

My mother was making my wedding cake. It was going to be classic and relatively straight forward. In a word... boring. I had ordered the small model of Mount Vernon as a box to hold wedding cards that people would bring to the reception. As a joke one day I said, "hey mom, maybe we should build that building into the cake." I was absolutely joking, but my mom took it as a challenge.

The resulting cake was not only beautiful and unique, it was also a whimsical conversation piece at the reception. I wouldn't have changed anything about it. It was perfect.
