iPhone Cake
I made this cake for my 22 year old's birthday. He was / is obsessed with his iPhone, so I thought, what better creation to make for a birthday cake.
I used a traditional rectangular cake pan (13" x 9" x 2") to create two cake layers, one vanilla and one chocolate. After baking the two cake layers, I used vanilla frosting to stack the two cake layers on top of each other. Next, I used a sharp blade to curve the edges of the cake to resemble the shape of the iPhone.
Next, I created black frosting by mixing black food coloring with white vanilla frosting. Using the black frosting, I frosted the entire cake. I created a second batch of "silver/platinum" frosting by slowly adding black food coloring while whipping white frosting until it reached the desired silver/platinum color.
Next, I added the silver/platinum frosting to an icing tube and selected a thin, circular cap and bordered the edges of the top face of the cake. I then changed the cap to a flat 1-inch cap and iced 2/3 of the bottom, right and left sides with the silver/platinum frosting.
Next, I located a public image of the home screen of the iPhone via Google images. Using Photoshop, I edited the photo changing the date on the calendar icon to the birthday date and added "Happy Birthday" in script. I printed out a high resolution image of the new image on high quality photo paper and took it to Publix to scan and print an edible image.
Last, I pasted the edible image onto the top of the cake as shown in the photo.
