I Hate Fruitcakes

by Jan

I hate fruitcakes, they are such a throwback to an era before widespread availability of fresh fruit. My grandmother had not figured this out yet and each Christmas would send not just one or two easily disposable cakes, but two dozen, which we would then have to keep out on the counter for her, so that it appeared that we liked them, but just had not eaten them yet.

After she left, we would take them to our church for the cookie donation bin for after church coffee receptions. Just as at home, they were never eaten and six months later were still there, until one Sunday, in the church bulletin, a notice appeared that said, if no one was to eat the half dozen fruitcakes in the donation bin, would the family who donated them please throw them out. I found this horribly embarrassing.
