Hot Lava Volcano Cake
Hot Lava Volcano Cake
For his 6th birthday, my son asked me to make a "hot lava" volcano cake. I got a few ideas from the internet and consolidated them.
The base is an inverted platter that I covered in aluminum foil and frosted. I then mixed up one boxed cake mix, and split it into two different sized mixing bowls (small and medium) and baked them.
I stacked the two cakes on top of each other, cutting some of the bottom of the top piece out so it sat snug on the other one, and frosted them together.
I crushed up some Heath bars and sprinkled them around the base to look like rocks. I then took some vanilla frosting and heated it up slightly in the microwave and added red food coloring. While it was still warm I drizzled it down to look like lava.
I cut out a hole in the top, and put the candles in. Voila! He absolutely loved it! The funny part of the story is that he told me after he saw it that he thought I was only going to make a flat cake and "draw" a picture of a volcano on it! I guess I made more work for myself, but it was worth it!
