Homemade Fruitcake Disaster

When I was about 15 my mother and I decided we would have a go and bake a fruit cake. It seemed to be going well and I enjoyed mixing in all the fruit even though it seemed quite hard work. We lined the cake tin with brown paper and placed it in the oven to bake.

I'm not sure what went wrong but the cake was not a success. It was dry and flat and hard. Mum reckoned we had the oven set too high but I think we might have used plain flour. It was a sad moment.

We had a kerrie blue terrier called Butch. That dog would eat anything so we gave him the cake. Butch hauled the failed item out into the back yard. I thought he was going to eat it but no,he buried it!

I've never tried to make another fruit cake.
