Homemade Fruitcake Disaster

Last Christmas, my family decided to take on the age old tradition of fruitcake baking. From everything we've heard, fruitcakes are a sensitive matter. As gifts, they have a reputation, and not a sterling one.

As cooks that love a challenge, however, we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, it didn't work out so well. We used my wife's mother's recipe. To say that the cake didn't turn out well is an understatement. The cake wasn't edible. Even so, we gave it to our family friends and everyone got a laugh out of the ordeal. That was the end of it until last weekend. We got together for a Christmas party and they handed us our gift - the very same fruitcake!
