Hello Kitty Birthday Cake
My daughter, Yuzu, was turning three this year. She is half-Japanese, half-American, and she loves Hello Kitty (Kitty-chan in Japan). My wife and I decided to put on a Hello Kitty themed birthday party. My wife made all of the plans, but I got stuck making the cake!
I wanted to make the classic Hello Kitty face, but I couldn't do it without a shaped pan. There was no way that I could cut it out of a square, like cutting George Washington's head out of Mt. Rushmore. Luckily, my local Party City store got me covered. They had a perfect Hello Kitty pan that didn't cost me too much.
I made 8 cakes of different flavored box-mix cakes as practice so that I could get the icing just right. I was using a baker's bag to cover the cake in little icing stars. By the time Yuzu's birthday came, I was ready.
Check out the picture - a labor of love that my daughter was blown away by!
