Decorating Happy New Year Cake

We were searching for a Happy New Year cake and found a pretty colorful one at our nearby Wal-Mart. The only problem was that it cost $24.95. So we decided to make one that was somewhat similar.

We bought a box of Duncan Hines Classic White Cake Mix for under two bucks. For the icing we picked up a couple of cans of Pillsbury Creamy Supreme Vanilla frosting, which were less than two dollars each.

My wife baked a sheet cake according to the instructions and used yellow food coloring to turn the white icing into a bright yellow color.

Then the hard part began!

I took a toothpick and scored the words "Happy New Year" into the icing. My wife's daughter used some tubes of Betty Crocker Classic Gel Food Colors to spell out the words in three different colors. Then, she and her mom put on various colored sprinkles and bits of icing to finish the decorations.

They were not happy with the way the cake came out, but I thought it looked great. And you know what - it tasted even better!
