German Poppy Seed Roll

German Poppy Seed Roll

This is a cake that I remember from my childhood in Germany.

Dough:
Mix 25g fresh yeast with 3 tbsp Sugar and let it stand until liquid.
Add 150 ml milk, 50g melted butter and 1 egg.
Stir everything. Add 400g flour and a pinch of salt.
Knead until you have a nice dough.
Put the dough to rest for an hour.

Filling:
Pour hot water over 150g poppy seeds. Let the mixture cool down and drain the seeds.
Boil seeds for 2 minutes in 50g butter.
Add 100g sugar, 100g raisin and peel of an orange.

Shape dough in a flat square and coat with filling. Leave a border of ca. 2cm.
Roll dough up and let the cake rest for 3o minutes before baking
it by 190°c in a preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Icing:
Mix 150g icing sugar with 1 tbsp of lemon juice and 3 tsp water.
Stir well together and coat the cake with the topic.
Sprinkle with nuts.

I made this cake yesterday (without orange peel and substituted walnuts for raisins) and waited for my husband to come home today to eat it.

It was delicious- just like my mother used to make...I found your recipe online because I was craving a childhood memory as well. :)

Thanks!
