Flower Cake

For my daughter's 4th birthday I made a regular strawberry mix cake for my flower child. What was extraordinary about it was the homemade pastel fondant flowers on the top of it. It looked just like a bouquet of flowers when it was done!

I baked the strawbery cake mix in two 8 inch round layer pans and used food coloring to tint store bought vanilla icing grass green. I then iced the layers and piped large round stems around the cake from top to bottom.

I found a homemade fondant recipe online, made it, tinted it in small batches of pastel colors (pink, purple, blue, yellow). I found small flower shaped cookie cutters at a local craft store and once the fondant was rolled out I cut out the flower shapes and shaped them into an empty egg carton so they would dry with more of a three dimensional flower shape to them.

When the flowers were dry, we placed them all over the top of the green stem iced cake and piped yellow centers into the flowers. My daughter was so happy with the cake and it was so pretty!
