First Birthday Cake
For my daughter's first birthday, I wanted to give her a cake of her own. You know the classic tale -- the birthday girl smashes her cake rather than blowing out the candle. So my goal was to let her destroy her own cake while still letting the guests have some.
I baked a standard vanilla cake from a box in a 13 x 9 pan, then cut rounds using a small cereal bowl. I leveled them, stacked them up, and iced the whole deal with homemade buttercream icing tinted the color of her room. For embellishment, I used store-bought purple decorator's icing to pipe stars, as well as a numeral "1" candle.
My daughter was only too happy to get her own cake. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for her to throw it on the floor.
