Chocolate Creme Torte

The best birthday cake I ever made wasn't for a child but for my Mom. It was her 58th birthday and I was in my first year of college. I wanted to show her how much I cared and do something special for her.
I found one of her old cookbooks with a great picture of a Chocolate Torte that she used to show me when I was a kid. She always said she wanted to try one but didn't have the courage to try to make it.
I went to the store and purchased all the necessary ingredients and a few extra additions. I followed the recipe to make a 4 layer torte. Four layers of a dense chocolate cake with four layers of a creamy whipped chocolate mouse in between.
But I added my own special touch, chocolate chips in the filling. I baked two round cakes in two separate round cake pans and then cut them in half with a serated knife. Then spread the chocolate mouse with chocolate chips in between each layer. I shaved chocolate swirls off of a chocolate candy bar with a cheese slicer and spread them across the top.
I don't think I've ever seen my mom so HAPPY! She was so excited to finally try it after so many years that we didn't even get photos.
