Cake Decorating Frosting

What's the best cake decorating frosting?

That depends on what kind of cake you are making, but a basic white icing is great for birthday cakes.  You can color some of it with food coloring to make decorations and writing.

Butter Cream

Butter cream icing is a favorite.  Not only because it is easy, but also because it tastes good.

All you need is some confectioners' sugar, shortening, a little milk (and/or water), vanilla and salt.  You can even add some almond extract if you want to get that wedding cake taste.

There are hundreds of recipes for butter cream frosting on the Web, but you can just start mixing the ingredients in your kitchen until you have the right consistency.

Add some cocoa powder to make a chocolate icing.

Cream Cheese Frosting

This is real easy to make.  Just throw two (8-ounce) packages of softened cream cheese in a bowl and mix it with 1/2 of a cup of softened butter, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 2 cups of confectioners' sugar.

Mix it up for a minute or two and it is ready.  Be sure to refrigerate it afterwards.

Making fondant is more complicated.  We suggest doing a Web search for videos on how to make fondant so you can see how it is rolled, draped, and crafted into different shapes.

To make a beautiful cake it helps if you the right tools.  A frosting spatula, a decorating stand, and some decorating bags will make things easier.

The biggest secret in making a professional-looking cake is to make sure you eliminate crumbs and create a smooth and even finish.
