Black Forest Cherry Torte

My eighteen-year-old daughter specifically requested a Black Forest Cherry Torte for her birthday. Of course, the temperature outside was ninety-plus degrees and I have no air-conditioning in my kitchen, so the circumstances were not perfect for this cake. At one point I gave up on the disintegrating-before-my-eyes home-made whipped cream and sent my husband out for a can of Reddi-Whip in hopes of keeping the whole thing from melting.

It may not have looked perfect, but the cool creamy cherry goodness was perfect for the hot summer evening party!
