Ants Birthday Cake

My nephew's birthday falls on Independence Day. We thought it would be funny to have a picnic like cake topped with giant plastic ants. He had a recent obsession with ant hills in our backyard, and he just adored this cake.

The local craft store provided different tools that we used to make this cake. I'm not sure of the specific names, because I don't make cakes very often, but we used something to air-brush on the red color to make the top of the cake look like a table cloth.
