An Eight Cake
An Eight Cake
When my son turned 8 he wanted a rather unique cake. He wanted it to look like a ball, have the number 8 on it and be covered in Pokemon characters. To top it all of he really wanted me to make it for him. I usually have someone else make the fancy decorated cakes so this was a big challenge for me on several different levels.
To make it a little easier I found a pan that was flat on the bottom but the top was rounded. This way he got half of the ball he wanted but it would still lay flat for me. I did some research online and used a cake recipe that was a combination of a store bought cake mix and pudding to keep the cake extra moist.
I knew from past experience that it is hard for me to make the frosting looks smooth so I bought some frosting bags and star decorating tips so I could just dot the frosting on the cake. From there I used my imagination on what it should look like.
My son really enjoyed watching me decorate and he wanted to help bring the Pokemon feel into the cake by gathering some of his favorite characters and sticking them on the top. The cake was nothing fancy but it was a big hit with my son and all of his friends. I discovered that the labor of love was worth the smiles on the faces of all.
